Tarawa to be decommissioned in March
Posted : Thursday Sep 11, 2008 6:50:36 EDT
SAN DIEGO — The Navy plans to decommission the amphibious assault ship Tarawa, a 32-year-old amphibious assault ship that helped protect and escort the destroyer Cole after it was badly damaged in a terrorist attack in 2000.
The Navy says Wednesday the Tarawa would be decommissioned on March 31, 2009, at Naval Base San Diego. It was not immediately clear what would happen to the ship after it was withdrawn from service.
It is the second ship to be named after the 1943 battle of Tarawa, an atoll in the Pacific Ocean. It was one of the fiercest battles of World War II.
Navy officials say former Tarawa crew members will be invited to a decommissioning ceremony in December and allowed to tour the ship one final time.
