Mount Whitney arrives with aid for Georgia

Staff report
Posted : Friday Sep 5, 2008 10:46:16 EDT

The amphibious command ship Mount Whitney pulled into Poti, Georgia, on Friday carrying more than 17 tons of humanitarian supplies for Georgians, according to the Navy.

Mount Whitney, homeported in Gaeta, Italy, has both Navy sailors and civilians aboard. The crew will deliver juice, powdered milk and hygiene products, as well as 4,000 blankets donated by the U.S. Agency for International Development.

This is the third U.S. ship to deliver aid to Georgia. The Coast Guard cutter Dallas, which is operating under the 6th Fleet, and the destroyer McFaul delivered more than 115 tons of aid to the port in Batumi, Georgia, in the past few weeks. Three naval aircraft — a C-130, C-9 and C-40 — have flown “20 continuous missions airlifting 325 tons of humanitarian aid into Tbilisi,” also as part of Operation Assured Delivery, according to the Navy.
