The Coast Guard commissioned its newest patrol boat Monday in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The 87-foot cutter Alligator will join the cutters Nantucket, Ocracoke and Crocodile in the patrol boat fleet at Sector St. Petersburg.
“The often tough and difficult demands of modern Coast Guard missions require highly capable multi-mission platforms, and the cutter Alligator is exactly that,” Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., said in a statement following the commissioning ceremony. His wife, Pat Mica, commissioned the ship.
According to a Coast Guard statement, Lt. j.g. Andrew Vicks, of Lynchburg, Va., will command the ship and its 11-member crew.
This is the fifth U.S. commissioned vessel to bear the name Alligator.
