Trials for assault ship successful

The new amphibious assault ship Makin Island successfully completed a third series of trials Thursday and may be on its way to a spring delivery date to the Navy.
The 41,000-ton vessel has been under construction at Northrop Grumman’s Ingalls shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss., since 2003. The ship was damaged in August 2005 by Hurricane Katrina, and last April, Northrop announced the company would take a charge of about $320 million to fix faulty wiring and other workmanship problems.
The Makin Island first went to sea in December and conducted another round of builder’s trials in February. Several senior sources in the Navy expressed satisfaction with those trials.
The ship differs from previous amphibious assault ships in having gas turbine, rather than steam, propulsion.
The Makin Island is to enter service later this year and will be based at San Diego.
