A four-star submariner has been tapped to become the next vice chief of naval operations, according to a Pentagon announcement on Wednesday.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates has nominated Adm. Jonathan Greenert, head of Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Va., to be the next VCNO.
Greenert will be replacing the current VCNO, Adm. Patrick Walsh, who Gates nominated to become the next commander of Pacific Fleet in Hawaii. The current PacFleet commander, Adm. Robert Willard, was earlier tapped to become the next commander of U.S. Pacific Command, also in Hawaii.
Replacing Greenert at Fleet Forces Command will be Vice Adm. John Harvey, currently the director of the Navy Staff. Harvey has been nominated to receive a fourth star as part of the move.
Vice Adm. Samuel Locklear, head of 3rd Fleet in San Diego, has been nominated to replace Harvey at the Navy Staff. In addition, Gates nominated Rear Adm. Richard Hunt to replace Locklear at 3rd Fleet. Hunt is currently the director of the programming division for the chief of naval operations.
