7 staff officers nominated to flag rank

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announced Thursday that the president nominated the following active-duty Staff Corps captains for their first stars:

• Clinton Faison III, commanding officer, Naval Hospital, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

• Katherine Gregory, chief of staff, First Naval Construction Division, Norfolk, Va.

• Kurt Kunkel, chief, Strategy Division, J4, Joint Staff, Washington, D.C.

• Kevin Slates, chief of staff, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Washington, D.C.

• Mark Tidd, command chaplain, U.S. European Command, Stuttgart, Germany.

• Eleanor Valentin, chief of staff, National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md.

• Jonathan Yuen, deputy commander/chief of staff, Joint Contracting Command Iraq/Afghanistan in Iraq.
