Coast Guard accepts cutter Bertholf
Posted : Friday May 8, 2009 18:28:31 EDT
The Coast Guard took final acceptance Friday of the national security cutter Bertholf at its homeport of Alameda, Calif.
The 418-foot Legend-class cutter, estimated to cost about $700 million, had to overcome problems with its hull girder structures that threatened to reduce the 30-year lifespan of the ship. Those problems have been resolved, according to Lt. Cmdr. Anthony Russell, spokesman for the commandant.
“Final acceptance of Bertholf marks a new chapter for the national security cutter project and a new era for the Coast Guard,” according to a statement from Rear Adm. Gary Blore, assistant commandant for acquisition.
Bertholf was christened in 2006. Its sister ships, Waesche and Stratton, are under construction in Pascagoula, Miss. Materials for the fourth cutter, the Hamilton, have been ordered.
