Navy eyes RI land for alternative energy use

NEWPORT, R.I. — The Navy says it intends to retain about 100 acres of excess property in Rhode Island for possible use for an alternative energy project.

Lisa Rama, spokeswoman for Naval Station Newport, said Tuesday the Navy hasn’t committed yet to specific uses for the property in Portsmouth but is pursuing studies on wind and solar energy projects.

The Navy is still planning to give up nearly 260 acres as part of the Base Realignment and Closure process.
