SAN DIEGO — A U.S. Naval Academy midshipman was being held at a military brig Tuesday, awaiting charges after authorities said he tried to smuggle marijuana last week into the United States from Mexico.

“The investigation is still going on,” said Brian O’Rourke, a Navy Region Southwest spokesman in San Diego.

Navy officials did not identify the midshipman, a second-class mid who was detained June 10 by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents at the San Ysidro port of entry for allegedly having 150 pounds of marijuana.

The midshipman, who was in the San Diego area for annual summer training, was then transferred to Navy custody and was being held at the Naval Consolidated Brig at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station in San Diego, O’Rourke said.

“Charges are pending regarding alleged smuggling of marijuana across the border,” he said.
