1-star list could come out today

The list of the Navy’s newest one-stars will be released as early as Thursday, a Pentagon source has confirmed.

The selection board met in December. As new flag officers, this group of usually more than 30 individuals is subjected to greater scrutiny at higher levels than lower, more populous ranks.

Although named on the expected list, the current captains are not frocked without Senate confirmation, except when individually authorized by the secretary of defense, according to information with last year’s list.

The bulk will be surface warfare officers, aviators and submariners, with a likely handful of intelligence, engineering and public affairs officers.

The list is being released later than previous years, although Navy officials have said nothing has been out of the ordinary with the selection process. Going back to 2005, the list has typically come out in April or May.
