PASCAGOULA, Miss. — Northrop Grumman is preparing to turn over to the Navy later this summer to newest guided missile destroyer.
The Dewey completed its combined super trial last week in the Gulf of Mexico. It is the 26th Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer to be built by Northrop.
The 510-foot, 9,500-ton Dewey has four gas-turbine propulsion plants that will power the ship to speeds above 30 knots.
During the trial, Northrop Grumman and the Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey tested the ship’s weapons, communications and propulsion systems, among other features.
The Dewey is named for Adm. George Dewey, best known for his victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.
