Harvey becomes head of Fleet Forces Command
Posted : Friday Jul 24, 2009 12:35:25 EDT
Adm. John Harvey Jr. relieved Adm. Jonathan Greenert as commander of the Norfolk-based Fleet Forces Command during a ceremony on board the carrier Harry S. Truman in a pier-side ceremony Friday where Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead — himself a former Fleet Forces Command commander — was the guest speaker.
Harvey comes to the job from the Pentagon, where he was the head of the Navy staff. He brings extensive experience with him as he takes on the Navy’s top fleet command, having served first as a surface nuclear officer after graduating in 1973 from the Naval Academy.
His fleet experience includes command of the Spruance-class destroyer David R. Ray and the cruiser Cape St. George, as well as having been commander of Cruiser-Destroyer Group 8 and the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group.
Greenert heads to Washington to become the next vice chief of naval operations.
