PORT ARTHUR, Texas — The Coast Guard is spearheading an effort to recover oil from a submerged shipwreck about six miles off the Texas coast.
The Coast Guard says officials initially thought the spill, described as minor, came from a pipeline. That was ruled out after sonar captured an image of the ship's hull.
Salvage company Resolve Marine has determined that heavy fuel oil was onboard the submerged ship.
Several agencies are involved in the cleanup. The Coast Guard says the recovery effort could continue through the next few weeks.
