Posted : Wednesday Sep 30, 2009 8:29:13 EDT
NORFOLK, Va. — The Navy is decommissioning the amphibious transport dock Nashville, which returned to Norfolk from its final mission in June.
The ship is scheduled to be decommissioned Wednesday at Norfolk Naval Station.
The 570-foot Nashville was built in 1966 at Lockheed Shipbuilding in Seattle. The ship was launched on Oct. 7, 1967, and commissioned in February 1970.
During its final mission, the Nashville served as the Africa Partnership Station in the Gulf of Guinea and West Africa. It provided security cooperation and training to several African nations.
The Navy says the crew of the Nashville also provided medical and dental care to more than 5,000 people and took part in concerts and sporting events.
