NORFOLK, Va. — A brief ceremony Monday at Norfolk Naval Station marked the ninth anniversary of the deadly terrorist bombing of the destroyer USS Cole.
The Oct. 12, 2000, blast killed 17 sailors and injured 39 while the Norfolk-based ship was docked in Aden harbor in Yemen.
Family members of the Cole victims attended the memorial.
One speaker said the Cole attack is a “grim reminder” of terrorism’s human toll.
According to the Navy, the Cole left port Sept. 23 for a training exercise with ships from other countries.
