Clinic shooting suspect sent to medical center
Posted : Thursday Oct 22, 2009 7:07:26 EDT
The soldier accused of shooting and killing four other soldiers and a Navy officer May 11 at Camp Liberty, Iraq, is being held at a North Carolina medical center until he is “capable of assisting in his own defense,” according to an Army press release.
Sgt. John M. Russell was moved Oct. 16 from a pretrial confinement facility in Kuwait to the Butner Federal Medical Center in Butner, N.C.
A panel of doctors found Russell “unable to conduct or cooperate intelligently in his own defense” at this time, the press release states. Court-martial proceedings are pending.
Russell is facing five charges of premeditated murder and one charge of aggravated assault related to the killings.
The incident is still under investigation by U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command.
