Chiefs getting word on retirements
Posted : Wednesday Oct 21, 2009 15:11:34 EDT
Almost 6,000 retirement-eligible chiefs, senior chiefs and master chiefs will find out this week whether they’re staying or will be forced to retire, following this fall’s highly anticipated continuation board for senior sailors.
Navy personnel officials have sent messages to appropriate commanding officers telling them whether a senior sailor in their command must retire by June 30. Officials said they will not release a list of sailors told to leave.
Once commanders have notified their chiefs, those COs must notify Navy Personnel Command. When officials are satisfied that all or most sailors have been told, individuals will be allowed to log onto the BuPers Online Web site to see if they’ve been continued.
The board, the first in more than a decade, convened Sept. 21 to decide whom would be forced to retire. Sailors must not only be retirement-eligible, but have three years time in grade.
The board had no quotas. Officials said that the board’s results would be a pure “quality cut” and would determine if each “can continue to effectively exercise leadership and be a positive role model” and whether the sailor remains “viable for further advancement.”
