Veterans honored at 2 SC coastal sites
Posted : Wednesday Nov 11, 2009 14:22:30 EST
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — Those who served the nation are being honored this Veterans Day with ceremonies at two sites along the South Carolina coast.
North Charleston will hold a ceremony honoring veterans Wednesday at Sterett Hall, located on the site of the old Charleston Naval Base. Each veteran receives a special commemorative coin from the city. Four hundred veterans attended last year.
Later, at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, the World War II Submarine Memorial will be dedicated. It recognizes the 52 vessels, 274 officers and more than 3,100 enlisted men lost on subs during the war.
The Charleston Naval Base and shipyard was open for almost a century. The base closed in 1996 as the military shed domestic bases.
