Thach set to return home to San Diego
Posted : Thursday Nov 5, 2009 11:55:22 EST
SAN DIEGO — About 220 sailors will return home Thursday, completing an around-the-world deployment aboard the frigate Thach, Navy officials said.
The Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate is scheduled to return to San Diego Naval Base after the five-month deployment that took it through the Suez Canal and Panama Canal, 3rd Fleet officials said in a news release.
During the deployment, Thach operated in the northern Persian Gulf as part of Task Group Iraqi Maritime, where it assisted in protecting Iraqi oil platforms and conducted counterpiracy and countersmuggling missions, and crew members helped train Iraqi forces in maritime security operations.
Thach deployed in the spring with the Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group.
