Navy to close Ingleside 5 months early

The Navy is speeding up the closure of Naval Station Ingleside, Texas, opting to leave the base five months earlier than planned.

In another move related to the Base Closure and Realignment Commission, the service officially announced the relocation of the Naval Criminal Investigate Service from the Washington Navy Yard to Quantico, Va., effective Sept. 15, 2011.

Both were approved in December and announced by the Navy in separate official notices Wednesday.

Ingleside, most recently home to the Navy’s Mine Warfare Command, will close April 30 — five months earlier than the planned Sept. 30 exit — because “mine warfare commands and forces tenant upon the naval station will have transferred” by that date, according to the notice.

The base will then be turned over to the city of Ingleside for redevelopment.

The NCIS move is part of a larger move mandated by BRAC that will consolidate all five of the military investigative agencies at Quantico. That move, the notice said, will also include the Department of the Navy Central Adjudication Facility, which does security clearance investigations for the service.
