LCACs bring supplies ashore in western Haiti

GRAND GOAVE, Haiti — Sailors with Assault Craft Unit 4 based at Little Creek, Va., brought the first landing craft air cushions ashore here Friday in a dry riverbed.

On board the LCACs were four Marine light armored vehicles from the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. It was the farthest west the U.S. military had reached on the ground since amphibious operations started Tuesday. The Marines aboard the LAV-25s will provide security for a new base of operations at an adjacent Christian mission.

Crowds of intrigued Haitian onlookers lined the banks of the riverbed, which is 50 yards wide, but has only a small stream moving through the middle. Kids played in what little water there was. As the LCACs went ashore, they had to judiciously dodge fishermen in small boats, unfazed by the military operation going on around them.

The LCACs are expected to ferry personnel, equipment and supplies ashore all day.
