VFW post opens Internet cafe for troops, family

NEW ALBANY, Ind. — A southern Indiana VFW Post has launched a $10,000 project to help troops stay in touch with their loved ones while they’re deployed.

VFW Post 3281 in New Albany has created an Internet cafe in a former storage room at the post. Four computers will be available at no charge from noon to midnight, and post quartermaster Curtis Zoellers says he’s willing to open at other hours if time-zone differences require it.

Family members will be able to e-mail soldiers and see them through videoconferencing.

Zoellers says soldiers’ morale is better if they are able to communicate with their families while deployed. He expects the service to be especially helpful for older people who might not have computers at home.
