SecNav announces best-chow award winners

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus announced Friday the winners of the Navy’s annual competition to see which command has the best chow, broken out into afloat commands and U.S. and foreign land bases.

The commands earn the 2010 Capt. Edward F. Ney Memorial Award from Naval Supply Systems Command. They’ll be recognized in a ceremony at a food service trade show April 17 in Reno, Nev.

Judges from NavSup visited each command for a daylong inspection of the contenders’ galleys and a tasting of the day’s lunch.

The fleet winners:

å Submarine: Attack sub Providence

å Small afloat: Frigate Vandegrift

å Medium afloat: Dock landing ship Tortuga

å Large afloat: Command ship Blue Ridge

å Aircraft carrier: John C. Stennis

The ashore winners:

å Continental U.S. mess: Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla.

å Overseas general mess: NAS Sigonella, Italy
