SNOWSHOE, W.Va. — The Army is honoring some of the workers who helped rescue 17 crew members aboard a downed Navy helicopter last month.

The ceremony is scheduled for Saturday at Snowshoe Mountain Resort.

Among those being honored for their roles are local firefighters and employees from Snowshoe and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank.

The helicopter crashed Feb. 18 in Pocahontas County. Though no one suffered life-threatening injuries, ice and subfreezing temperatures combined with rugged terrain to make for a difficult search and rescue effort.

The cause of the crash remains undetermined. The helicopter was headed from Fort Pickett, Va., to Camp Dawson as part of a training exercise involving the Navy and National Guard.

The helicopter is based at the Naval Station Norfolk, Va.
