MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Navy has another ship named after Montpelier native George Dewey, the Vermonter who became known as the hero of Manila Bay for his service during the Spanish American War.

The guided-missile destroyer Dewey was commissioned Saturday at the U.S. Naval Weapons Station at Seal Beach, Calif.

Officials say the warship features technologically advanced air defense systems and can carry two helicopters and 276 crew members. Its home port will be San Diego.

Adm. Dewey led a squadron of warships in 1898 to defeat a Spanish fleet in Manila Bay without a single American casualty.

The Dewey commissioned on Saturday is the third Navy vessel to carry the name.
