Active E-9 opportunity steady at 11.93%

The active-duty master chief selection board will pick 410 senior chief petty officers to get a second star over their anchors.

The board, which convened Monday, will choose the new master chiefs from a field of 3,438 eligible senior chiefs.

The overall opportunity to advance to E-9 is 11.93 percent — exactly the same as last year — though the number of quotas rose slightly from last year’s total of 397 who were advanced.

Thirty-three ratings will advance above the Navy-wide average, with 37 falling below the mark.

Top on the list is machinery repairman, which has one eligible senior chief and one quota— the only rating with 100 percent opportunity. Submarine and surface nuclear electronics technicians will advance 50 and 40 percent, respectively.

Making the greatest improvement this year is cryptologic technician (interpretive), which recovered from zero quotas last year to advance five.

Five ratings don’t have any quotas this year: submarine logistics specialists and yeomen; religious program specialists; missile technicians; and fleet band musicians.
