Tell us what you think: Atlantic vs. Pacific

Staff report
Posted : Monday Mar 29, 2010 8:33:05 EDT

The past few years have been a time of flux for the fleet: Submarines moving from Connecticut to the West Coast; a stream of carriers leaving Norfolk, Va., etc. All this movement raises a good question: Where is the best place to get an assignment in today’s Navy?

We’d like to hear from you about the advantages and disadvantages of the two big halves of the Navy — the Atlantic Fleet (roughly the East Coast of the United States) and the Pacific Fleet (including the West Coast, Hawaii and Japan).

Which do you prefer? Which has more interesting assignments? Where’s the better place to have your family? If a brand-new sailor asked you which half is better, what would you recommend? How are the cultures different?
