Select officers in the Medical Service Corps are eligible for some of the biggest special pays in recent years — and some could pull in as much as $184,000 in the next four years.
Licensed clinical psychologists and physician assistants are the biggest winners. Both groups are eligible for:
Incentive pay of $5,000 per year.
Retention bonuses of $10,000 per year for a two-year obligation, $15,000 per year for a three-year obligation, or $20,000 per year for a four-year obligation.
Board certification pay of $6,000 per year.
An accession bonus of $12,500 per year for a three-year obligation, or $15,000 per year for a four-year obligation.
Clinical social workers are eligible for:
Board certification pay of $6,000 per year.
An accession bonus of $6,250 per year for a three-year obligation, or $7,500 per year for a four-year obligation.
The pharmacy officer special pay program is holding at last year’s level of $15,000 annually. That was the first boost since 2003.
Nurse Corps bonus boost
New nurses are eligible to receive an accession bonus of $20,000 per year for a three-year obligation, or $30,000 per year for a four-year obligation. To qualify, the nurse must:
Be a graduate of a school of nursing accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education that conferred a baccalaureate or advanced nursing degree.
Obtain and maintain a license as a registered nurse.
Have not have received financial assistance from the Defense Department while pursuing a baccalaureate degree in nursing. This includes the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program and Financial Assistance Program.
Not have served as a former nurse officer, active or reserve, in any of the uniformed services, in the last two years, or held a nurse corps appointment in at least two years.
Getting paid
Written agreements entered into on or after Oct. 1 are eligible for the aforementioned bonuses. Officers have until March 27 to request retroactive payment without having to meet retroactive approval requirements.
