SAN DIEGO — A Seabee is in trouble after she allegedly ran a Humvee into the back of a car on a road in Okinawa, Japan, on Tuesday night and then left the scene, Navy officials said.
Two hours after the incident, military police arrested the Seabee, identified as a petty officer third class, a few miles from the crash scene, Fleet Activities-Okinawa spokesman Patricia Sloss, said in a statement.
Sloss did not release the name of the sailor but said she is assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 1 at Camp Shields. The battalion is homeported in Gulfport, Miss.
The Japan Times newspaper reported that the sailor is suspected of driving drunk. The Humvee struck the back of a car carrying a local man and his two sons, ages 2 and 10, just before 11 p.m. The toddler reportedly suffered a cut to his forehead. The driver ran off on foot, leaving the Humvee with its engine still running. Another driver contacted police about the accident, which happened near Camp Schwab, according to the report.
