Ball caps & coveralls: Tell us what you think

Staff report
Posted : Tuesday Apr 13, 2010 7:56:25 EDT

The Navy is restricting the wear of ball caps and coveralls, two staples of shipboard working uniforms.

Effectively immediately, ball caps will not be worn with the new blue-and-gray camouflage Navy working uniform, unless a sailor is on the bridge or is part of a command training team. And beginning next year, coveralls will be restricted to underway periods only, unless a shoreside job is expected to create excessive wear on the NWU.

So what do you think? Do ball caps belong with the NWU? Was the Navy right to restrict ball caps to coveralls and the physical training uniform? Has the command ball cap’s importance passed, or should Navy leadership give sailors more options — not fewer — for wearing them?

As for coveralls, should they be restricted to underway only, or should the Navy allow them to be worn pierside? Should the NWU be the only working uniform that sailors can wear when they’re not underway?

Active-duty sailors and officers are invited to share their opinions with senior writer Mark D. Faram, at mfaram@navytimes.com. Be specific. Your comments could be used in an upcoming story.
