Chance to advance to E-8 remains steady

The active-duty senior chief selection board can pick as many as 1,497 chiefs to get a silver star over their anchors this year.

The board, which convened Monday, will choose the new senior chiefs from a field of 14,395 eligible chiefs.

The overall chance to advance to E-8 this year is 10.4 percent — the same as last year — although the number of quotas rose by 52 from last year’s 1,445 who advanced.

Forty-seven ratings will advance above the Navy-wide average, with 38 falling below the mark. The top three ratings:

• Missile technician: 17 quotas, 56 candidates, 30.36 percent chance to advance.

• Explosive ordnance disposal technician: 27 quotas, 99 candidates, 27.27 percent.

• Mineman: 13 quotas, 49 candidates, 26.53 percent.

Making the greatest improvement this year is cryptologic technician (interpretive), which recovered from zero quotas last year to advance five.

Just one rating has no quotas this year: CTI group three — those specializing in Latin America — won’t advance any of its 21 eligible candidates.
