Carrier Ronald Reagan begins sea trials

Staff report
Posted : Wednesday May 19, 2010 17:46:52 EDT

After six months of pierside upgrades and maintenance, the carrier Ronald Reagan returned to sea this week for sea trials.

Reagan headed out of San Diego Bay on Tuesday after spending time at its home berth at Coronado Naval Base, Calif., while it received systems upgrades, quality-of-life modernizations and other maintenance during a planned incremental availability.

The scheduled maintenance followed last year’s deployment to the Western Pacific and the Persian Gulf region, the carrier’s fourth in four years. Before Reagan left on its 2009 deployment, a faulty voltage regulator in one of its eight electrical generators forced a one-day delay in the ship’s departure. Reagan, which led Carrier Strike Group 7, returned to San Diego on Oct. 21 after spending five months overseas.
