Va. AG donating $55K from vets group to charity

RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia Attorney General Kenneth Cuccinelli said Wednesday that he will donate to charities $55,500 his campaign received from the director of a veterans organization that is under investigation.

Cuccinelli said the money will go to veterans’ charities to be named later.

Regulators in a handful of states, including Virginia, are investigating fundraising and spending by Bobby Thompson and the United States Navy Veterans Association. Cuccinelli said he initially set aside his contribution from Thompson, awaiting a determination on whether the funds were misappropriated from the organization.

Cuccinelli said the campaign was practicing the principle of presumed innocence. Attempts to locate Thompson and certain other members of the group have been unsuccessful, Cuccinelli said, so he decided to go ahead and donate the funds.
