KINGS POINT, N.Y. — The Merchant Marine Academy has a new leader.
Navy Rear Adm. Philip Greene Jr. was appointed superintendent of the academy last week. He succeeds Rear Adm. Allen Worley, who retired in January after a year, citing a relative’s illness.
Greene graduated from the academy in 1978 and the Naval Postgraduate School in 1985. He most recently was director of the Navy’s Irregular Warfare Office, developing maritime preventive security strategy.
Previous assignments include commander, Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa; director for policy, resources and strategy, U.S. Naval Forces Europe/Africa; commander, Destroyer Squadron 31; commander of the Spruance-class destroyer Fletcher; and commander of the patrol missile hydrofoil Taurus.
In announcing Greene’s appointment, Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood said Greene’s “perspective and organizational strengths” will move the Merchant Marine Academy forward.
The academy awards bachelor’s degrees in marine engineering or marine transportation, and a merchant marine officer’s license.
