LARNED, Kan. — A Larned man has received honors he earned in World War II — 65 years after he served.
Rep. Jerry Moran of Hays joined about 150 friends and relatives to honor Kenny Eye during a ceremony on Wednesday.
The 88-year-old Eye received medals and ribbons including a World War II Victory Medal, one for his participation in the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign and a good conduct medal.
Eye served in a Navy air transport squad as a mechanic. He also flew planes in the South Pacific. He says he didn't get his medals and ribbons before he was discharged because he was in a hurry to get home to western Kansas.
The Garden City Telegram reports that Eye's family says he had recently said he would like to have the honors, so they went to work to get them to him.
