Openings aboard ‘Old Ironsides’

Furling sails, climbing on yardarms and firing 5,600-pound long guns may not be typical duties in today’s Navy, but a few sailors will have such opportunities soon.

The Navy is accepting applications to join the crew of the historic frigate Constitution, the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat, anchored at the Charleston Navy Yard in Boston.

Several billets are available in the next nine months: a chief culinary specialist with the Navy enlisted classification 3529; a CS1; a boatswain’s mate first class and a BM3; a logistics specialist second class and an LS3; a yeoman second class and a YN3; a personnel specialist second class; a damage controlman second class; and a billet open to any second class petty officer and two billets open to any third class petty officer.

Applications must be in no later than Sept. 9, and applicants should have a projected rotation date between October and June. Others may apply with command permission.

According to an Aug. 10 fleetwide message, applicants “must have an impeccable appearance and exceptional military bearing.” Applicants cannot have a drunken driving conviction within the past five years or any alcohol-related incidents within the past 36 months.

Those interested should see their command career counselor for additional details. But those afraid of heights need not apply, according to the message.
