Blue Angels add 3rd Pensacola show in 2011

The Blue Angels will fly Pensacola shows in May as part of the 100th anniversary of naval aviation.

The flight demonstration team will also fly its traditional July Pensacola Beach show and the November season-ending homecoming show at Naval Air Station Pensacola, the team's home base.

The May flights, scheduled for May 3 and 4, will be to boost the community's celebration of a century of naval flight. The May performances are tentatively scheduled at NAS Pensacola, though "the actual location is up in the air," said Lt. Cmdr. Amy Tomlinson, Blue Angels event coordinator.

The Blue Angels will also perform a brief flyover May 8 in conjunction with the symbolic launching of the National Flight Academy, an education program of the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation that is scheduled to open in 2012.

Its purpose will be to motivate students in grades 7 through 12 to learn more about science, technology, engineering and math with a more hands-on, adventurous approach. The inside of the building will look and feel like an aircraft carrier.

The 2011 Blue Angels season begins March 12 in El Centro, Calif., where the team holds its winter training sessions. The Blue Angels will perform at Pensacola Beach on July 9, and end their season Nov. 11 and 12 at NAS Pensacola.
