SAN DIEGO — The frigate Jarrett departs Friday for a deployment to the Eastern Pacific that will focus on drug interdiction and humanitarian assistance, the Navy’s 3rd Fleet announced.

The ship will leave its berth at Naval Base San Diego for an independent deployment to the 4th Fleet region for the military’s Joint Interagency Task Force-South. Its missions will include community relations work under the Navy’s “Project Handclasp.”

Along with its crew of 230, Jarrett will take along an SH-60B helicopter detachment and a Coast Guard law enforcement detachment. The ship is commanded by Cmdr. Ferdinand Reid.

During a six-month deployment last year in the eastern Pacific, the frigate helped apprehend a dozen drug traffickers and intercepted $266 million worth of illicit narcotics.
