For the first time in its history the Coast Guard Academy will be led by a woman.

Rear Adm. Sandra Stosz has been named superintendent of the New London, Conn., school, replacing Rear Adm. J. Scott Burhoe, who will retire July 1.

Stosz graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1982, and serves on the school’s board of trustees. She also holds a masters of business administration from Northwestern University.

Stosz is director of Reserve Leadership and has more than 12 years of sea service.

Burhoe said in a statement he is pleased with the decision.

“Rear Adm. Stosz is an excellent choice to succeed me as superintendent,” he said. “She has a distinguished record of service, and as a member of the board of trustees understands the importance of continuing to move the academy forward on its current track.”
