A senior petty officer died Tuesday aboard the aircraft carrier Enterprise stemming from a “non-combat related incident,” according to a Defense Department news release Wednesday.
The circumstances surrounding the death of Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class (AW) Vincent Filpi of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., have not been disclosed. A Navy spokesman said that there is an investigation into the incident.
Filpi, 41, enlisted in April 1992. After attending Naval Aviation Schools Command in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, he was assigned to the carrier Saratoga for two years before heading to the carrier Kitty Hawk. He would later head to the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit and Strike Fighter Squadron 37, both in Lemoore, Calif. His career also included tours in Sigonella, Sicily; Oceana, Va.; and Norfolk, Va. He served aboard the carrier Theodore Roosevelt before being assigned to the Enterprise in May 2009.
Discuss:
Filpi served as the Safety Department’s leading petty officer while on Enterprise. He was quoted in a Sept. 7 Navy news story, encouraging sailors to avoid becoming complacent and unaware of the details of their job and to follow safety procedures, and in a Jan. 17 Navy news story about staying safe during underway replenishments.
His awards include a Meritorious Unit Commendation and two Good Conduct Medals.
Enterprise is currently in the Arabian Sea.
Filpi’s father, reached by phone in Florida, declined to comment.
