Naval Academy would be hampered by shutdown

Midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy will feel the impact of a government shutdown if a deal cannot be reached Saturday by midnight.

The Academy’s civilians, who represent about 50 percent of the school’s faculty, would be furloughed if Congress cannot reach a deal on the budget. The academy announced Friday in a release that midshipmen would continue to attend classes taught by military faculty but students from classes taught by civilians would be assigned “self study.”

Academy spokesman Cmdr. Joe Carpenter said he would not comment further on how a government shutdown would affect academics at the academy.

Both varsity and club level sporting events will also be canceled or rescheduled, according to the release. There are multiple sporting events scheduled for this weekend — including baseball, golf and tennis — that would be affected if the government shuts down.
