MCM crew’s CO is 21st fired this year

The commanding officer of mine countermeasures crew Fearless was fired Thursday for “demonstrated poor personnel management,” according to a statement from Naval Surface Force Pacific.

Lt. Cmdr. Martin Holguin was fired by Capt. David Chase, commander of Mine Countermeasures Squadron 3, due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command.

Holguin, the 21st skipper fired in 2011, was temporarily reassigned to administrative duties at 3rd Fleet headquarters in San Diego, the statement said.

Crew Fearless is embarked on the mine countermeasures ship Pioneer in port in San Diego. The crew is scheduled to leave for Bahrain at the end of this month for a six-month deployment aboard the mine countermeasures ship Ardent.

Lt. Cmdr. Lee Shorter, who had been executive officer, was given temporary command.

According to his official biography, Holguin reported to Fearless in March 2010 as XO.

He graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. His previous assignments include serving as fire control and weapons officer aboard the cruiser Shiloh; as an associate fellow for the Chief of Naval Operations Strategic Studies Group in Newport, R.I.; and as weapons and combat systems officer aboard the cruiser Port Royal.
