Shipyard CO’s firing made permanent

The commanding officer of Norfolk Naval Shipyard who was initially fired in May has been permanently relieved of command.

Capt. Greg Thomas was fired for conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman, a violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Thomas, who was nominated for rear admiral in March 2010, was removed from command May 23 and assigned to Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington.

His firing was based on an investigation by the Navy Inspector General into the command climate and the way Thomas treated his subordinates, a statement from Naval Sea Systems Command said.

Details of the investigation have not been released.

Rear Adm. Joseph Campbell has run the shipyard since June and will stay in the position until a permanent commanding officer is found. Campbell is a former shipyard commander and was head of the NAVSEA directorate for logistics, maintenance and industrial operations.

Thomas was the 11th commanding officer fired this year; a total of 20 COs have been relieved for a variety of reasons in 2011.
