NORFOLK, Va. — Thousands of sailors aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier George H.W. Bush are returning to Norfolk following the ship’s first deployment.

The aircraft carrier and the ships in its strike group will arrive in Virginia on Saturday following a seven-month deployment, the Navy said Monday.

Ships in the strike group include the guided-missile destroyers Truxton and Mitscher, and the guided-missile cruiser Anzio.

While deployed, the strike group supported military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq in addition to providing maritime security.

About 150 naval aviators from Carrier Air Wing 8 will return to Naval Air Station Norfolk’s Chambers Field and Naval Air Station Oceana on Wednesday.
