Casino proposed on site of old R.I. naval base

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. — While Massachusetts debates where to place a casino two lawmakers in Rhode Island say they have a perfect spot for one in the Ocean State: the former Naval Air Station Quonset Point.

Rep. John Carnevale, D-Providence, said building a casino at the North Kingstown location would help Rhode Island’s economy and create a tourist draw. The Quonset peninsula boasts nearby highways, an airport and a deep-water port that can accommodate cruise ships, Carnevale noted.

Carnevale said he and Rep. Joseph Trillo, R-Warwick, are finalizing details of their idea.

Rhode Island leaders are debating various gambling proposals after Massachusetts authorized up to three casinos and a slot parlor. Next year, Rhode Island will vote on a referendum that would allow table games at a slot parlor in Lincoln.
