The Navy announced three flag moves Thursday, two of which involved female officers. The announcements were made in a statement sent by Navy Secretary Ray Mabus and Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jon Greenert.

• Rear Adm. Nora Tyson, a naval flight officer who is the first woman to command a carrier strike group, will be vice director of the Joint Staff. Tyson commanded Carrier Strike Group 2 during the aircraft carrier George H.W. Bush’s seven-month maiden deployment in 2011.

• Rear Adm. Michael Hewitt will be deputy director of the Special Programs Cross Functional Team on the Joint Staff. Hewitt commands Patrol and Reconnaissance Group in Norfolk, Va.

• Capt. Rebecca McCormick-Boyle, who has been selected for her first star, will become the chief of staff at the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in Washington, D.C.
