Historic CG cutter Eagle returning home

NEW LONDON, Conn. — The historic Coast Guard cutter Eagle is returning to its home port after a repair trip to Baltimore.

The vessel is scheduled to return to Fort Trumbull on Saturday after spending the last four months in dry dock for inspection, repairs and maintenance.

The ship will remain in port in New London until April, when it is scheduled to leave on a training tour for U.S. Coast Guard Academy cadets in support of OpSail. The international gathering of the world's tall ships commemorates the bicentennial of the War of 1812.

The cutter was built in 1936 in Germany as the Horst Wessel, and the U.S. later claimed it as war reparation and recommissioned it in 1946.

More than 600 Coast Guard cadets and officer candidates train on Eagle each year.
