VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A Virginia Beach-based sailor was charged with felony child neglect Thursday after his 4-year-old son was shot at home in what authorities believe was an accident, police said Friday.

Information Systems Technician 1st Class (IDW/SW) Nicholas A. Pierce, 26, is being held without bond at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center.

His son, suffering from a single gunshot wound, was rushed into surgery at a local hospital. The boy remains in critical condition, Virginia Beach police say.

The shooting occurred Thursday afternoon at Pierce’s residence, located about four miles southwest of Naval Air Station Oceana.

Pierce, of Mayport, Fla., enlisted in June 2004, according to Navy Personnel Command. He is assigned to the Center for Information Dominance Learning Site, Norfolk.

The case remains under investigation by the department’s Homicide Unit.
