NEWPORT, R.I. — A Rhode Island native has been named the new president of the U.S. Naval War College in Newport.

Navy officials announced Wednesday that Navy Rear Adm. Walter E. Carter Jr. will be the college’s 54th president. The Burrillville native will replace Rear Adm. John Christenson, who has been president since March 2011.

The date for the change of command ceremony will be announced at a later date.

Carter is currently the commander of Carrier Strike Group Twelve in Norfolk, Va.

He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1981 and became a naval flight officer. He went on to fly 125 combat missions and win many awards and medals including the Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale Leadership Award, Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat V and a Bronze Star.
