Lieutenant named lacrosse league’s top rookie

Freshly minted Army 2nd Lt. Jeremy Boltus was picked up as a last-round draft pick in Major League Lacrosse, a professional outdoor lacrosse league, shortly after graduating from the U.S. Military Academy in May. Boltus played for the Hamilton (Ontario) Nationals, helping lead the team to the league’s championship game Aug. 28 while getting named the league’s Rookie of the Year. The award was based on votes by the head coaches and general managers of all six MLL teams.

Academy officials carved out a yearlong job for Boltus at West Point as an intern in the athletic department, helping to train the next crop of lacrosse players until he moves on to other training.

“It’s been an amazing feeling trying to make the most of this opportunity,” said Boltus, who also said he’s in discussions with several teams to play in a winter pro indoor league. Both leagues practice and play games only on weekends, so Boltus is hoping to be able to rejoin the Nationals next year even though he’ll be starting artillery officer training at Fort Sill, Okla.

Boltus graduated as one of Army’s all-time best in men’s lacrosse with 214 career points and 124 career assists.
